PROFILE OF THE PROGRAMME:

 

To date, GAU Dance Department exists as the first and the only department that offers undergraduate degree level dance education in North Cyprus. The entire curriculum is designed to focus on contemporary dance with a wider spectrum, embracing a multidisciplinary approach within the performing arts. To this end, the academic programme incorporates technical training to build co-ordination, strength and stamina whilst focusing on the connection between technique, creativity and performance. Learning is further optimised by the inclusion of forms of physical theatre, visual arts, music, media and site specific practice.

 


VISION

 

Our vision is built on the understanding that dance is an art form inherently subjected to constant evolution and evaluation, challenging traditional boundaries.  In this ever shifting context, dance is situated alongside other art forms such as theatre, visual arts, music, media and site-specific work, demanding versatility, creativity, imagination, deepened bodily knowledge, extensive awareness on body-mind integration,  research and constant reevaluation. This philosophy reflects our values, leading us to foster a unique and outstanding professional environment where the focus is on interdisciplinarity, individuality, self-motivation and own sense of goal. This ensures our students to develop fundamental skills in order to respond to the diverse challenges of today’s world.

 


AIMS AND OBJECTİVES

 

1. To foster students’ understanding of dance as an art form.

 

2. To support students in gaining an insight into the specific vision of GAU Department of Dance which focuses on the principles of contemporary dance characterised by an amalgamation of ballet and a range of contemporary dance techniques of Cunningham, Graham, Release and Limon with an emphasis on yoga and pilates; theatre and visual arts, improvisation and creative exploration. 

 

3. To enable students to grow as versatile, autonomous and independent dance artists who can analyse and reflect upon their own and others’ artistic practice.

 

4. To rovide learning experiences that enable students to acquire vital skills in technique, choreography and performance in the practice of dancing and dance making.

 

5. To enrich students’ theoretical and conceptual knowledge and understanding of the foundations that underpin dance and other related art forms.

 

6. To prepare students for a rich and varied professional dance environment through interaction with experienced artists and teachers whilst supporting and nurturing their individuality.

 

7. To provide students with career opportunities in dance performance, performance studies, dance composition, dance theory, dance research, dance criticism, movement analysis, dance education, forms of physical theatre, visual arts, media and site specific practice.

 

8. To prepare students for postgraduate study in various fields of dance and dance-related practices.

 


PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The first year of study has a strong emphasis on the development of fundamental technical and theoretical skills whilst the second year focuses on deepening the acquired practical and creative skills. The third year is aimed at equipping students with a range of performance skills in order to prepare them for a rich field of contemporary dance. The emphasis of the final year is on supporting students in transitioning into professional dance artists through exposing them to professional learning practice for successful career placements in the performing arts and creative industries.

Physical facilities offered by our department include well-equipped dance studios, an excellent performance hall, an AV/media room with a small exclusive library, a semi olympic swimming pool, a fully equipped fitness center and a café offering daily nutritious and balanced home-made local dishes essential for health and wellness. There is also a superb theatre building with outstanding stage and lighting facilities accommodating additional studios where students can create and perform new work.

Our department supports students to build on their knowledge and understanding of the fundamental skills that are essential for any performing artist by enhancing their technical, artistic and intellectual potential in order to adapt to the challenges of today’s world and to develop professional artistic career worldwide.

 

11. To provide a ground for coexistence and a common creative artistic future in Cyprus, GAU Department of Dance has been and will continue to collaborate in Bi-communal performance arts projects with dance artists and institutions in South Cyprus. The department also has been and will continue to network with other international dance communities to promote and develop the art of dance at a local and international level. This approach nurtures the engagement and networking skills of our students.

 

12. GAU is a university functioning at the global level with its international campuses in Canterbury, UK; Istanbul, Turkey; offering our students mobility throughout their studies.
